Teachers set the tone of their classrooms; that is, they create the conditions for language learning. However, all teachers have bad days, where it can be hard to put aside their outside concerns, put on a “teacher face” and deliver an inspiring lesson. Like teachers, students can also carry their emotions from outside into the classroom, sometimes preventing them from engaging in class work. Teachers therefore need to develop strategies that will enable them to manage their emotions, make responsible decisions and maintain positive relationships with their students. This workshop will offer drama-based techniques for teachers to learn to check their emotions before going into the classroom. Teachers will also reflect on how these strategies can be implemented in their own classrooms to enhance their students’ social and emotional learning competencies and essentially, check it at the door!
